Chambray and (Faux) Leather

I’m always trying to find ways to take pieces that could be more formal and make them more laid-back and casual. Take these faux leather pants, for example. I think sometimes they can seem a little over the top when paired with a dressy top and heels. It’s just too much….well for me, anyway.

But take these same leather pants and throw on a loose chambray, black ankle boots, and a casual print crossbody and you have something that’s chic, but still casual. I wore this outfit to teach and it was edgy, but still professional and comfortable (my two non-negotiable criteria for teaching outfits).

Here are some of the elements of my outfit. The Kut from the Kloth ‘Brigitte’ faux leather pants and the Sam Edelman ‘Petty’ ankle boots are the exact ones I’m wearing. The chambray shirt was originally from Old Navy and the exact one is no longer available. The beautiful Aztec print bag is from Etsy: seller info on that is below. I’ve linked some similar styles here as well.

I think this same idea would also work with a crisp, white loose button down shirt and jeans. The white shirt would be more formal, but the jeans would cazh it down just enough. It’s all about balance, right?

So this sweet bag is from Cindy Mars’ Etsy shop, CindyMars7 . Cindy makes the BEST Aztec print bags. She has lots more handmade designs and items (camera bags, backpacks, totes, crossbody bags, etc.), and she can even custom make you a bag with the fabric and style of your choice as well. I got this bag from her several years ago and I’m still carrying it…and still getting a lot of compliments on it. Check out her shop if you’re in the market for a unique bag.

So long, and stay casual!
