Something to Smile About: My Review of Smile Brilliant Teeth Whitening (+ Giveaway!)

Today I’m going out on a limb to show you close-ups of my TEETH. Never (ever) thought I’d be saying that. My teeth are a little crooked and have always been kind of yellow. Definitely NOT something I typically feature in photos.

As a teacher mom, taking the time (let alone the money!) to go to an office for a whitening treatment is just not going to happen. I brush twice a day, floss when the mood hits (brutal honesty: it happens about once every few weeks, usually after I’ve eaten something like popcorn), and hit the dentist’s office for a cleaning once or twice a year. I’ve used whitening toothpaste for several years now and I thought my teeth were as white as they were going to get. WRONG!

Enter the Smile Brilliant At-Home Tooth Whitening System. When I was contacted by Smile Brilliant to see if I would be willing to try it out and blog about my results, I admit I was hesitant. You know, because of the aforementioned close-up photos of my crooked yellow teeth. But then it hit me that I’m probably not the only person eager to brighten up my teeth without spending a fortune and carving time out of my busy days to go to the dentist. For myself. We all know going for the kids is not the same thing. So, I agreed to give it a whirl. What’s the worst that could happen?

I loved what the box said when it arrived:

The kit

The kit contains everything you need: materials to make impressions (Smile Brilliant’s whitening trays are actual soft molds of your teeth to ensure a custom fit and perfect coverage), whitening gel, desensitizing gel (if you need it), and applicators. Best of all, there are clear, simple instructions with lots of photos and visuals. Perfect for people like me who are not good at following directions. 🙂

Making a Good Impression (or Two)

I was really nervous about making the impressions to send to the Smile Brilliant lab. Like I said above, directions and I don’t always get along very well. The fact that the kit included extra materials in case you mess one up made me a little more confident. In the end, the process was quick and easy and I didn’t even need the extra materials.

As an aside, the blue, putty-like stuff you use to make the impressions was SO fun to smoosh between your fingers — very satisfying in a tactile way, like a really, really good bunch of Play-Doh or a perfect stress ball. You just smoosh it up, press it into the tray, and then press it into your upper/lower teeth. It dries and hardens, and you pop the two hardened trays into the included mailing bag to send to the lab.

A few weeks later I received my custom-fitted whitening trays (along with their own storage case) in the mail. The trays are light and flexible, and mine fit my teeth perfectly.

My Results!

I was absolutely blown away by the great results I got! The photos below show what my teeth looked like before Smile Brilliant and then after just 6 applications. Yep, just SIX! The top photo in the first pair below is BEFORE, and the bottom photo is AFTER. Then in the side-by-side photos, the photo on the left is before and one on the right is after. Not that I needed to tell you that because you can totally tell!

Here’s a side view:

You can see it even more dramatically when I zoom you right in. See? Ah-maze-ing!

Pretty cool, huh!

Things I was worried about but shouldn’t have been:

Here’s a list of my biggest fears before undertaking this process just in case you share any of them.

1. Ain’t nobody got time for this.

I was worried I’d have to sit around at home or not be able to talk and do things while whitening. Not so. With the trays, you just squirt the whitening gel in, press the trays onto your teeth, and go. They recommend whitening before bed because you’re not supposed to eat within 30 minutes of whitening, and that worked out well for me. I’d put the trays in after dinner, then go do my regular evening stuff. I did everything from dishes to reading aloud to my youngest son to walking the dog and even going to the store. The only thing people might notice is that you talk with a bit more of a lisp than usual. They’re quite comfortable to wear around. I usually left mine on for about 1.5 to 2 hours each time. You can whiten on consecutive days, but I ended up doing it about once every other day, mostly because of kids’ evening activities where I didn’t get home until much later than usual and didn’t want to have stay awake for a few hours to take the trays out before going to sleep.

2. What if my teeth turn whiter in some spots (or stayed yellow in others)? Yikes!

If you look at my close-ups, you can see I have some variation on my front teeth to begin with. Would this get worse with whitening? Nope. If anything, it lessened the variety of yellows and made my front teeth look more uniform in color. Cool!

3. There is a little chip on my front tooth that has been repaired — will that part whiten faster (or slower) than the rest of my teeth?

Again, nope. The whitening formula treated that little chip filler exactly the same as the rest of my teeth, thank goodness. If anything, it stands out less than before!

4. What if my teeth get sensitive? Will it hurt?

My teeth are a bit sensitive to begin with. Sometimes things that are cold make my teeth hurt, and I was worried that I might experience some sensitivity when whitening my teeth. Again, nope. I did feel a little burning on a few of my gum areas the first couple of times, but I discovered this was because some of the gel had oozed out of the whitening trays and was sitting on my gums. The directions say to wipe off excess gel. When I started doing that, I didn’t have this problem anymore. I know that some people do have problems with sensitivity when whitening: Smile Brilliant knows this too, and you can request a kit that includes Desensitizing Gel to use after each treatment to help. I did receive the Desensitizing Gel in my kit, but I didn’t end up using it because the whitening formula didn’t make my teeth sensitive at all. Maybe it’s because I rarely whitened on consecutive days? I think this is something that may be different from person to person, so if you do tend to have sensitive teeth, you’d want to get the Desensitizing Gel to have on hand in case you need it.

5. What if I do it wrong and totally mess it up?

As long as you read and follow the directions, I think it would be really hard to mess this up. I think this because I am notorious for messing up even the simplest directions. Just ask my husband what happens whenever I try to assemble toys for the boys…. I was really relieved that this whole process, from making the impressions to using the whitening trays, was a snap. Queue the Staples “That Was Easy” button.

6. And the biggest — what if it doesn’t work for me?

This really worried me. I had already agreed to do a blog post. What if my teeth didn’t get whiter? I thought this was a real possibility because in all my years of using whitening toothpaste, I hadn’t really seen much improvement. Needless to say, I was really pleased with the results. My teeth looked whiter after the VERY FIRST treatment! Check out the “after” photos from each treatment.

The Bottom Line

This worked for me. Period. And if you’ve been around ETS for a while, you know that when it comes to reviews, I try to tell it like I see it. A positive review means I really liked something, and I am positively positive about Smile Brilliant. I can’t really compare Smile Brilliant to the strips or kits you can get at the grocery store since I’ve never used them, but I can say that this was easy, painless, efficient, and best of all, effective for me. As of today I’m ditching the tooth-whitening toothpastes and sticking with Smile Brilliant whenever I need to brighten up. Fo’ realz.

Oh, and another good thing is that the kit comes with 4 tubes of professional teeth whitening gel. Each tube has 3 to 4 FULL (top and bottom) applications in it. My 6 applications only used up about 1.5 tubes! That means I have plenty left to keep whitening until I’m blinding passersby with my gleaming choppers (turn down the high beams, lady! LOL) or, more seriously, hit my teeth up with a few more applications a few weeks or months from now (no clue how long the whitening effect lasts — I’ll let you know!) when I need a touch up. For now, I’m going to be able to….

Have you had any experience with custom-fitted teeth whitening trays or other at-home teeth whitening products? Anyone been to the dentist to have it done there? I’d be curious to find out how this compares. I’d bet that it stacks up pretty well with just about anything else based on the results I got.

Note: I was sent a free tooth whitening kit from Smile Brilliant in exchange for trying it out and blogging about my experience. As always, all opinions expressed here are 100% my own.
